Graham had his four month check-up on Friday. He is 17lbs, 5 oz and 25" long. That puts him in the 90th percentile for weight and the 50th percentile for length. Nice to see length catching up a little! He took his shots well with his cries falling well short of the octave he reached last time. The doctor was very pleased with his health.
And we got the ok to start solids... how fun! As with every new baby endeavor, the questions arise. Which rice cereal do we pick: organic, regular, name brand, vitaboosted? And do we add formula or breast milk or filtered water or tap water? Such choices seem inane, but they become glaringly more difficult while standing in the grocery store aisle for many more minutes than you should, considering the inexperienced system the food will be entering and the ensuing monthly costs once the decision is made. Silly, huh?
So to get to the good part... Graham loves to eat! Yes, I know that none of you are shocked by this fact. However, many children's systems are not ready to eat at 4 months: their tongue reflexes push out the food; they're milk junkies and like nothing else; they don't get the whole spoon idea, etc. Graham started on a Tablespoon's worth of extremely diluted rice cereal the first night, sucking it down like a champ - no issues. After several spoonfuls he started to cry, so I nursed him the rest of his meal. The next day we found out that he was crying only because the food wasn't coming fast enough. See the breast/bottle provides continuous food on demand while the spoon must be reloaded causing much frustration to obviously starving baby! So Nathan and I got serious and bought him a proper highchair, spoon and bowl. At the most recent feeding he finished 2 teaspoons of rice cereal with about 1 Tablespoon of warm water. Assuming all continues to go well, next week.... carrots!
